Introduced in 2006, the 1 oz American Gold Buffalo is the first .9999 fine, 24-karat gold bullion coin issued by the United States Mint. James Earle Fraser’s classic 1913 Buffalo Nickel design places a Native American profile on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse.

Each coin contains one troy ounce of fine gold and carries a $50 legal-tender denomination. The design pairs a detailed portrait with a bison standing on a mound, linking modern bullion to a familiar American coin design. The $50 face value is separate from its market price, which reflects gold content and the coin's premium.
